-English Lake. North Judson. Aldine. Bass Station. Bass Lake-
USBR35 enters Starke County southbound from LaPorte County over the Kankakee River in historic English Lake. Just into Starke County is a public access site to the Kankakee River which in 2016 was declared a National Water Trail by the Department of Interior. USBR35 soon crosses Toto Road which offers the direct entry to the offices of the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area.
Next USBR35 joins the American Discovery Trail, which extends from Delaware to California. Continuing southeast, the two multi-state routes enter North Judson--the only incorporated town between the cities or LaPorte and Rochester-- which offers services to hungry or thirsty travelers.
USBR35 leaves North Judson on nearly nine miles of motor-vehicle free public multi-use paths and greenway. This segment is also known as the NJ-Erie Trail. Centered on the rail banked right-of-way, much of the path is elevated and offers great views of the Kankakee sand country. The landscape includes groves of oaks, prairies and marshlands, as well as rich farmland with an occasional fragrant mint field.
USBR35 passes a few miles from Bass Lake, Indiana’s fourth largest glacially formed lake. Active local initiatives are improving signage and access from the trail north to Bass Lake and south to Winamac and the Panhandle Pathway. Just before reaching US Highway 35, USBR35 separates from the American Discovery Trail and the NJ-Erie Trail. It leaves Starke County for Pulaski County, transitioning from Central to Eastern Time and from Northwest to Central Indiana.
